How to Stay Consistent With Exercise After 40
Sep 09, 2026
Imagine this…
It’s six weeks from now.
You feel stronger. More energized. More comfortable in your body. And proud that you’ve created an exercise routine you’ve actually been able to maintain.
Not because you followed a perfect plan.
Not because you pushed yourself harder every day.
You made progress because you found a way of moving that worked with your body, your energy and your real life.
For many women, staying consistent with exercise after 40 can feel more challenging than it once did. Your schedule may be full, your energy can fluctuate, and the workouts you relied on in the past may no longer feel right for your body.
But that doesn’t mean you’ve lost your motivation or discipline.
You may simply need a more flexible approach.
Why Is It Harder to Stay Consistent With Exercise After 40?
Most women don’t struggle because they don’t understand the importance of exercise.
They already know that movement can help them feel stronger, improve their energy, support their health and increase their confidence.
The challenge is fitting it into real life.
You may begin the week with the best intentions, only to have work, family responsibilities, poor sleep or an unexpected change in your schedule get in the way.
Then you miss one workout.
One missed workout becomes several, and suddenly it feels as though you’ve fallen completely off track.
This is what happens when your routine depends on perfect circumstances.
After 40, consistency doesn’t come from forcing yourself to follow a rigid plan. It comes from creating a routine flexible enough to support you when life doesn’t go according to plan.
The Problem Isn’t a Lack of Willpower
How many times have you told yourself:
“I just need to become more disciplined.”
“I need to stop making excuses.”
“I’ll start again on Monday.”
These thoughts make consistency feel like a test of your character. But missing a workout doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means the original plan didn’t have enough flexibility built into it.
If your only option is a one-hour workout at a specific time, what happens when you don’t have an hour?
If your program is centred around high-intensity exercise, what happens when your body needs a lower-impact day?
If you miss the one class you planned to attend, does that mean you have to wait until next week to try again?
A sustainable fitness routine gives you more than one way to succeed.
Five Ways to Stay Consistent With Exercise After 40
1. Create a flexible weekly plan
Instead of planning the “perfect” week, create a routine that allows for different options.
Decide which workouts you would ideally like to complete, but also identify what you can do when your schedule changes.
Your plan might include a live class when you want accountability, an on-demand workout when you need flexibility, or a short mobility session on a lower-energy day.
Flexibility doesn’t make your commitment weaker. It makes your routine more resilient.
2. Make shorter workouts count
A workout doesn’t have to be an hour long to be worthwhile.
On a busy day, 15 or 20 minutes of intentional movement can help you maintain momentum and reinforce the habit of showing up for yourself.
A shorter workout isn’t a consolation prize. It’s a practical tool that helps you remain consistent.
The goal isn’t to do everything every day. The goal is to keep moving forward.
3. Prioritize strength without punishing your body
Strength training becomes especially valuable as we move through our 40s and beyond. But becoming stronger doesn’t require punishing workouts or pushing through discomfort.
An effective routine should offer modifications and allow you to adjust the intensity to suit your body.
Some days you may feel ready for a challenge. On other days, lower-impact movement, mobility or stretching may be exactly what you need.
Listening to your body and changing the plan when necessary isn’t giving up. It’s intelligent training.
4. Choose movement that matches the day
Your energy won’t be identical every day, so your workout options shouldn’t be identical either.
Ask yourself:
What kind of movement would support me today?
You might choose strength training when you feel energized, a shorter workout when time is limited, or mobility when your body needs recovery.
When you have different ways to participate, you’re less likely to abandon your routine simply because the original workout no longer fits.
5. Build in accountability and support
It’s much easier to remain consistent when you aren’t doing it alone.
Accountability could come from attending a live class, working with a coach, joining a small community or telling someone which workouts you plan to complete.
The right community also reminds you that you don’t need to be perfect to make progress.
You need encouragement, realistic options and a place where you feel understood.
Why Flexibility Creates Consistency
Many fitness programs give you a schedule. A sustainable fitness program gives you choices.
When you have access to live and on-demand workouts, different class lengths and a variety of training styles, you don’t have to abandon your routine because one class time—or one type of workout, doesn’t work for you.
Instead of saying, “I missed my workout, so I’ll start again next week,” you can ask:
What can I do instead?
That small shift is powerful.
It keeps one missed workout from becoming a missed week. It helps you move beyond all-or-nothing thinking and begin building trust in your ability to follow through.
You’re no longer relying on perfect attendance, a rigid plan or endless motivation.
You always have another way to continue.
What Could Change in Six Weeks?
Six weeks may not sound like a long time, but consistent actions can create meaningful changes.
You could feel stronger while completing everyday activities.
You may notice more energy, greater confidence and improved mobility.
You could become more comfortable modifying workouts to meet your needs instead of believing you have failed when you can’t do everything exactly as demonstrated.
Most importantly, you could prove to yourself that you can create a routine that lasts.
One of the things we hear most often from BUFFnation members is:
“I can’t believe how much stronger I feel. When I started, I couldn’t even hold a plank!”
That feeling doesn’t come from one perfect workout.
It comes from continuing.
