Why You Keep Losing Motivation (And What Actually Works After 40)
Jul 13, 2026
"I just need to get motivated again."
If you've ever caught yourself saying that, you're not alone. In fact, it's one of the most common things I hear from women over 40. We assume motivation is the missing piece. That if we could just find it again, we'd finally become consistent. But after coaching women for more than 20 years, I've learned something surprising. The women who stay healthy aren't more motivated, they simply make fewer decisions.
The Myth of Motivation
We often believe motivation comes first.
Then action.
But in real life, it's usually the opposite.
You take a walk ... and suddenly you feel like eating a healthier dinner.
You finish a workout ... and you're motivated to do it again tomorrow.
Action creates momentum.
Momentum creates motivation.
Not the other way around.
That's why waiting to feel motivated often keeps us stuck exactly where we are.
Decision Fatigue Is Keeping You Stuck
Think about how many decisions you've already made before dinner.
- What to wear.
- Emails.
- Work.
- Family.
- Appointments.
- Groceries.
- Errands.
By the end of the day, your brain is tired.
So when it's finally time to decide:
"Should I work out?"
"What should I make for dinner?"
The result: "Maybe I'll start tomorrow.."
It's not because you're lazy. It's because you're experiencing decision fatigue.
The more decisions you have to make, the harder consistency becomes.
Healthy Women Don't Have More Willpower
This might surprise you. The healthiest women I know aren't constantly relying on willpower. They've simply created routines that make healthy choices easier.
Their workout is already scheduled.
Their walking shoes are by the door.
Their breakfast is planned.
Their protein is ready.
They've removed as many decisions as possible. Less thinking. More doing.
Make Healthy Habits Easier With Habit Stacking
One of my favourite strategies is something called habit stacking. Instead of trying to create an entirely new habit, attach it to something you're already doing every day.
For example:
☕ After I pour my morning coffee, I sit down to do my personal development, or do a light spin on my bike.
🦷 After I brush my teeth, I'll drink a glass of water.
🍽️ After dinner, I'll go for a 15-minute walk.
📺 Before I turn on the TV, I'll prepare tomorrow's lunch.
Your existing habits become reminders for the new ones. Instead of relying on memory or motivation, your routine begins to work for you.
Start Smaller Than You Think
One of the biggest mistakes I see women make is trying to change everything at once.
They create an ambitious workout schedule. Completely overhaul their nutrition. Promise themselves they'll never miss another workout. It's exhausting.
Instead...
Start smaller.
Five minutes is enough.
One walk is enough.
One strength workout is enough.
One healthy meal is enough.
Because five minutes done consistently will always beat twenty minutes that never happen.
Success builds confidence. Confidence builds consistency.
The Real Secret to Staying Consistent After 40
The secret isn't more motivation.
It's fewer decisions.
The less you have to negotiate with yourself, the more likely you are to follow through.
Healthy habits don't happen because you're more disciplined than everyone else.
They happen because you've made them easier to repeat.
And that's what consistency really is. Not perfection. Not willpower. Just making the next healthy choice a little easier than the last.
This Week's Challenge
Choose one healthy habit you'd like to make easier this week. Then remove one decision.
Maybe you'll:
✔️ Lay out tomorrow's workout clothes tonight.
✔️ Prep tomorrow's breakfast before bed.
✔️ Put your walking shoes by the door.
✔️ Schedule your workouts for the week.
✔️ Decide now what your first healthy choice tomorrow will be.
One small change can make showing up feel so much easier. Because consistency isn't about trying harder. It's about making healthy choices easier.
