Halloween Candy Calling Your Name? 5 Simple Ways to Tame Sugar Cravings
Oct 30, 2026
Ever notice how one little Halloween chocolate can turn into two, then three, then four? 😩
Before you start telling yourself you need more discipline, let's talk about what's really going on. Sugar cravings aren't always about willpower. In fact, what you're eating, how you're sleeping and even your stress levels can influence how often you find yourself reaching for something sweet.
Between work, family, busy schedules and everything else life throws our way, it's easy to overlook some of the basics that help us feel our best. For women in midlife, changing hormones and disrupted sleep can add another layer to the mix.
Here's the good news. You don't need to cut out sugar, give up chocolate or feel guilty about enjoying a few Halloween treats. You can enjoy the foods you love AND take care of your health. Sometimes a few small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference in how you feel.
Here are five simple ways to help manage those cravings, support your energy and head into the holiday season feeling your best.
1. Increase Your Protein (Especially at Breakfast!)
Here's something many women don't realize: What you eat in the morning can influence how hungry you feel later in the day. Protein helps keep you satisfied longer and supports the muscle we naturally tend to lose as we age. Try adding eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, or a protein smoothie to your morning routine.
BUFF tip: Aim for around 20 to 30 grams of protein at breakfast if that fits your nutritional needs. And don't forget protein at lunch and dinner, too!
2. Don't Be Afraid of Healthy Fats
Trying to eat less by choosing fat-free everything? That might not be helping. Healthy fats slow digestion and, when paired with protein and fibre, can help you feel satisfied longer. Think avocado with your eggs, olive oil on your vegetables, or seeds sprinkled over your breakfast.
BUFF tip: Pair an apple with almond butter or a few slices of cheese instead of eating the apple alone. The combination may keep you satisfied longer.
3. Get Moving (Even for 10 Minutes!)
One of my favourite ways to reset when I'm feeling sluggish? MOVE! You don't need an intense workout to feel the benefits. A short walk after a meal can help your body manage blood sugar, while regular exercise supports mood, energy and stress management.
BUFF tip: Try a 10-minute walk after lunch or dinner. Better yet, grab your favourite BUFFnation workout and get moving.
Remember, consistency, not intensity!
4. Get Some Sleep (This One Is Huge!)
Did you know that a poor night's sleep can actually make you feel hungrier the next day? When you're sleep-deprived, changes in hormones that help regulate hunger and fullness can make sweet, energy-dense foods especially appealing. And during midlife, when sleep can already be disrupted, this matters even more.
BUFF tip: Try heading to bed 20 to 30 minutes earlier, keeping a consistent sleep schedule, and putting your phone away before bed.
5. Stop Trying to Make Up for Yesterday
This might be the most important tip of all. Ate more Halloween candy than you planned? So what! Skipping meals, restricting food or doing an extra workout to make up for it can leave you feeling hungrier, more tired and frustrated.
Instead, get right back to your usual routine. Eat balanced meals, drink your water, move your body and carry on.
BUFF tip: Your next choice matters more than what you ate yesterday.
