The Anti-Inflammatory Morning Shot I’m Making Right Now
Aug 12, 2026
A simple ginger, turmeric and lemon shot to help you start your day with intention, especially after 40.
Have you ever had one of those stretches where you just feel puffy, sluggish and a little off?
Maybe you've been travelling. Eating differently. Sleeping less. Having a few more restaurant meals than usual. Or maybe life has simply been busy and your usual healthy habits have taken a back seat.
And when that happens, it's tempting to think you need to overhaul everything. You don't.
Sometimes the best way to get back on track is to start with one small thing that tells your body, and your brain, "We're taking care of ourselves again."
Right now, this low-sugar ginger turmeric shot is one of mine.
It's fresh, spicy, incredibly simple to make, and packed with ingredients I've chosen specifically to complement a healthy, anti-inflammatory lifestyle.
And for women over 40, when we're already navigating changing hormones, energy, sleep and recovery, those small daily choices can add up.
Why I'm Focusing on Inflammation After 40
First, inflammation isn't automatically bad. It's part of the body's normal immune and healing response. The goal isn't to somehow eliminate inflammation completely. What we want to support is a lifestyle that helps our bodies maintain a healthy inflammatory balance.
And that's bigger than one food or one supplement.
Movement matters.
Sleep matters.
Stress management matters.
Protein and fibre matter.
What we eat consistently matters.
That's why I like thinking of this ginger shot as a morning ritual rather than a magic solution.
It gives me an easy way to incorporate several nutrient-rich plant foods before my day really gets going.
So what's actually in it?

✔️ Ginger: The Star of the Shot
If you've ever tasted fresh ginger, you know immediately that this little root has some personality. Ginger contains naturally occurring compounds called gingerols, which have been widely studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger is also probably best known for its connection to digestion and nausea. And that's one reason I love including it in a morning wellness shot. After 40, I don't want complicated wellness routines that require 14 supplements before I've even had my coffee.
Give me simple, real ingredients I can incorporate consistently.
Ginger checks that box.
✔️ Turmeric: The Golden Addition
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has been studied extensively for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Be careful it can easily stain EVERYTHING!
Here's something interesting: we add a small amount of black pepper to the finished juice because piperine, a compound found in black pepper, can increase the absorption of curcumin.
You don't need much. Just a little pinch stirred into your batch.
✔️Lemon: Bright, Fresh and Full of Vitamin C
Lemon gives the shot that fresh citrus hit while providing vitamin C and plant compounds.
I peel off the yellow outer skin before juicing but leave some of the white pith. And because we're using lemon rather than loading our wellness shot with apple, pineapple or other sweeter juices, we're keeping the overall recipe lower in naturally occurring sugar.
That's important to me. This isn't supposed to taste like fruit punch. It's supposed to taste like ginger!
✔️ Cucumber: Hydration Without the Sugar
Cucumber does something really important in this recipe: it gives us plenty of liquid without needing to rely on fruit juice. It's naturally high in water and gives the shot a lighter, fresher flavour.
It also helps balance that serious kick from the ginger.
✔️ Mint: Freshness + Flavour
I use a generous handful of fresh mint leaves.
Mint adds freshness and makes the combination of ginger, turmeric and lemon incredibly refreshing.
And there's something about that fresh mint-and-ginger combination that just feels like a reset in the morning.
My Low-Sugar Ginger Turmeric Shot Recipe
The Essentials:
- 200 g fresh ginger root, approximately 7–8 inches total, depending on thickness
- 2 lemons, peeled
- 1 medium cucumber, washed with the skin left on
- 75 g fresh turmeric root, approximately 3–4 inches total
- 1 generous handful fresh mint leaves
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
The How To’s:
- Wash all of your produce thoroughly.
- Peel the lemons, leaving as much of the white pith as practical.
- If you're using a juicer, there's no need to peel the cucumber, ginger or turmeric as long as they've been thoroughly scrubbed.
- Juice your ingredients in this order:
- Cucumber, mint, ginger, turmeric, lemon
- Then stir the black pepper into the finished juice.
That's it.
No Juicer? No Problem.
You can still make these ginger turmeric shots with a high-powered blender. Roughly chop the ginger, turmeric and cucumber, then add them to your blender with the peeled lemons, mint and about ½–1 cup of water to help everything blend. Blend until very smooth, then pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer, nut-milk bag or clean cheesecloth, pressing or squeezing out as much liquid as possible. Stir in the black pepper after straining.
The result may be slightly thicker than the juiced version, but you'll still get that fresh, spicy ginger kick. And if you don't mind a little more texture and fibre, you can skip the straining altogether and simply add enough water to make it drinkable.
No fancy equipment required, because healthy habits should be doable in real life.
How Much Should You Drink?
Because this is concentrated, more isn't necessarily better.
I recommend starting with approximately 1 ounce (30 mL).
If ginger tends to bother your stomach, have your shot with or after breakfast rather than on an empty stomach.
Store the remaining juice in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator and shake it before pouring because natural separation will occur. It will last for three days. You can also freeze individual 1-ounce portions and thaw them as needed.
But Here's the Most Important Part…
Please don't make your ginger shot and then think you've somehow cancelled out a day of poor sleep, chronic stress, very little movement and a diet lacking in nutritious foods.
That's not how health works. There is no single anti-inflammatory food. There is no magic morning drink. And there certainly isn't a juice that can "detox" you from your life.
What does work? Building small habits that you can repeat.
A ginger shot.
A protein-rich breakfast.
A walk.
A strength workout.
Drinking your water.
Getting to bed a little earlier.
Taking five minutes to regulate your nervous system instead of running from one thing to the next.
That's where the magic actually happens.
Your Healthy Reset Doesn't Need to Be Dramatic
This is something we talk about at BUFFnation all the time: You don't need to wait for Monday. And you don't need to punish yourself for a vacation, a busy week or a season where your routines weren't perfect.
Simply make your next choice a supportive one.
For me right now, that looks like opening the fridge in the morning, pouring a little ginger shot and starting my day with something I've intentionally made for myself.
Thirty millilitres.
Ten seconds.
One small promise kept.
And sometimes, that's exactly how we find our way back into a groove.
Consistency over intensity. Every single time.
